China is sending six warships to the area of islands disputed by both China and Japan (called the Diaoyu by China; the Senkakus by Japan).  Japan had earlier tried to buy the islands from a private individual, and control of the territorial has been a steadily escalating issue for several months now.  Sending warships is a signficiant act; we will have to see if the Japanese respond.  The US is most likely trying to tamp down the tension as much as possible.

The Chinese have just announced that Xi Jinping, the president-in-waiting, will make an appearance soon.  The report asserts that Mr. Xi is recovering from a bad back and has been undergoing physical therapy.  All China watchers will be examining his every step if and when he appears.

Foreign Policy has a great post on the differences between Romney and Obama on the Iranian issue.  There seems to be a great deal of confusion within Romney’s advisers.  The “red line” between capacity to build a bomb and the possession of a bomb is a difficult one to draw effectively.

Here’s a map of the anti-US protests currently going on.

  1. In regards to Romney’s foreign policy, especially towards Iran, he remains quite hawkish in favor of the conservative party. I agree with his statement, along with Obama, that it is inappropriate for Iran to express a desire to terrorize the world, in particular Israel. Both candidates agree that military strikes would be the absolute last result, and thank god; however, Romney wishes to initiate American involvement if Iran simply reaches the capability of obtaining these weapons. His immediate plans of action would be to continue sanctions and to set up more United States aircraft carriers. First off, Romney doesn’t need to place even more sanctions in Iran, which have seen the worst Sanctions in the country’s history, and in which many have already been put into place. Do we really need more air craft carriers in nearby international bodies of water would only increase tensions within the region. Earlier in the presidential race, Romney appeared to be determined to take “necessary” measures to protect the interests of the United States, similar to Israel. Romney has made it quite clear that he would support Israel if they were to attack Iran, rather than giving ore time for diplomatic measures. That’s extremely dangerous to the international community and the involvement of the United States and its military in international affairs. If Iran were to be attacked by Israel, with the support of hypothetical president Romney, it would create an international dilemma.
