The clashes between Palestinians and Israelis along the border of the Gaza Strip have led to recriminations about the number of people hurt during the demonstrations. According to National Public Radio: “The Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza said 1,416 Palestinians were wounded during the demonstrations, including 758 hit by live Israeli fire.” The Israelis put the number in the tens of people. The protests seem likely to intensify over time, but there is no reason to believe that the situation will stabilize soon. The Israelis have rejected calls for an investigation into their response to the protests.

China has just announced that it will impose tariffs of 25% on 128 products imported from the US. The tariffs are in response to the tariffs imposed by the US on imports of aluminum and steel and are supposed to take effect on Monday. For its part, US President Trump threaten to “stop” the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) if Mexico does not increase border security. In response, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, one of the principal candidates in Mexico’s upcoming national election stated: “Mexico and its people will not be the pinata of any foreign government”. It appears as if a trade war is becoming more likely.
